In a one-lane highway with cars in a single file. Have you ever been in traffic and when you beat it, you find out nothing was holding everyone back the road in front was free? Let me paint yet another picture. If we get rid of Danfo drivers, service lanes, splits, and merges, all the things we have discussed so far, we wouldn’t still solve the problem. The problem gets even crazier when there are intersections near service lanes where people have to merge unto the expressway. Splits and merges into and from service lanes cause the same problem as we see in an intersection. Service lanes are meant to solve this problem but it sometimes does the opposite. Starting and stopping of Danfo buses and other drivers leads to backing up of traffic and would behave like an intersection when you approach popular bus stops. Even without intersections, like on expressways that have splits and merges, the problem still finds a way to show its face. Traffic problems in Lagos (and other places) are more than just because there are too many cars. Once there’s discoordination at one intersection in a busy city like Lagos, it quickly spreads like a virus leading to a city-wide gridlock (something every Lagosian knows a thing or two about). This is one reason roundabouts are better than traffic stops and intersections, you don’t have to stop, this reduces the problem to an extent. This will ultimately lead to traffic at any intersection. We have short attention spans, and our reaction times are slow & dissimilar. Humans lack coordination at the levels we would need to solve traffic problems. Unfortunately, being effective is not in a man's nature. You would have passed through and saved time if everyone had accelerated simultaneously. Horns are blaring, you're furious, and you got stopped just as you were about to enter the promised land. The second waits for the first, the third for the second, and so on. The people in front of you are given the green light to go, yet they keep moving forward one after another you’d much prefer that they move at once. You are stopped in traffic by a traffic warden or a traffic light. This issue is one that we have all encountered.
